Description: March 8, 2006. On January 14, the Boeing 737-300 was sunk as an artificial reef near Chemainus. All the hatches, windows, engines, mechanical and electrical components, along with the undercarriage, were removed prior to the sinking. New supports were attached to the body to suspend the aircraft 15 feet off the bottom. The passenger compartment is 70 feet beneath the surface; the tip of the tail is 35 feet beneath the surface. The new reef is named the Xihwu Reef, a name created by local Native elders, out of respect for the red sea urchin. "Xihwu" is pronounced "Kee Quat." The reef is located at 48°56.142N/123°43.13W (Thanks to reader David Stapells for catching our coordinate error).
