Description: The Wauchope is situated about 500m off Sorrento boat launch ramp, on the Mornington Peninsula. The boiler can be seen just sticking out of the water. The Wauchope was a wooren ship which ran aground last century off Sorrento. It's cargo included the gas acetylene, which is used for welding. Unfortunately the ship caught fire, and was burnt to the waterline. Apart from the boiler, little remains of the wreck, although some well preserved timber can still be found around the boiler, for a radius of about 20m. Many of the original brass pins used to hold the planks together can still be seen in the timber. Bits of melted glass can also be found on the bottom and buried in the sane.
If you haven't seen the site before, its worth having a look at using the remains of a tank used in a previous dive, and it is not out of the if you are heading back to the Sorrento boatramp. What little remains of the ship is protected by the historic shipwrecks act.
