This is a dive to remember for various reasons it happened the morning after I got married. My new wife came along for the day but as she was not diving she was going to stay at Eaglehawke Dive Centre. Gary (the then owner) suggested she come along she should have been wary when he pulled out the gum boots and wet weather gear. Jim (NinjaDiver) and I had told her she would see beautiful scenery and maybe a dolphin or two... she was excited.
The weather was a little blowing and the seas were rough and it is about a 20-40 minute boat ride to the Nord. My wife spent the entire time holding on to the windshield screaming as we went over each large wave. Her face was covered in salt spray and she could hardly open her eyes. A few pilot whales followed the boat and we pointed to them she openned her eyes once looked then went back to screaming.
Gary decided to pull into Fortescue Bay for a break from the swell. We floated around for a few minutes my wife taking a few minutes break then of to the dive site. The swell had reduced. The dive it self was uneventful we did a dive with a group of people doing the DAN Oxygen course because one doesn't do a dive course without diving.
The nord is a popular spot the boat starts around 30 m and goes down to 41 m near the prop. At the time of this dive the toilet was still on the deck and we did the normal thing of sitting on it. I believe most of the structure has collapsed now. Blue water saftey stops are always boring.
We got back and when we finally got off the boat my wife would not speak to me... was almost a short marriage. Luckily we are still together and now have three kids but she still wont get ona boat with me. |
